In-text-exercises on Carboxylic Acid Derivatives
Review reactions of alkanoyl chlorides with exercise 20.6
Review addition-elimination mechanisms using exercise 20.10 and 20.11
Review chemistry of esters with exercise 20.14
The formation of the inactivated enzyme (box 20.2) by reaction of
penicillin with the enzyme involves the ring-opening of the beta-lactam by
an alcohol. Write down the mechanism for this reaction.
Exercise 20.16 is very nice and reviews some A&K chemistry.
Exercises 20.18 and 20.19 to review the Hofmann rearrangment.
Review the chemistry of nitriles with exercise 20.22.
Selected Problems to Chapter 20
Focus on being very clear about the overall reactions. Mechanistic
details can be added later as needed.
There were many new reactions introduced in this chapter.
Look over
problems 4, 5, 7, 11 and 15 to review some of these reactions.
Think about carbon acidities and study problems 2 and 16.
Among the syntheses of bigger molecules, focus on problems 24 and 26.
That's it for now, friends.
